A British Perspective on Welcoming Commonwealth Nations

As someone who identifies as British but not a citizen of the UK, my experiences visiting Commonwealth countries have been consistently positive. The warm welcome that I have received is a stark contrast to the sometimes chilly reception that I used to receive in the EU.

I have visited dozens of Commonwealth countries and even lived in Zambia on multiple occasions. My experiences have shown that the welcome in places like the South Pacific islands, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand is warm and genuine, especially when visited as a tourist.

Interestingly, in many cases, being British does not make much of a difference, and sometimes it can even have a negative impact. Many people in these countries have a preference for those they perceive as American or German rather than English. I myself am a mix of German and American heritage, and being born in Britain just happens to influence my nationality on paper.

Commonwealth Reactions Beyond Borders

Every Commonwealth country I have visited has shown a warm and friendly reception. For instance, Zimbabwe was particularly hospitable in the early 90s when I drove around much of it alone. During those times, people were friendly towards young British travelers, even in remote areas. However, this all changed with the political turmoil and economic decay that followed.

In India, although I entered on a British passport, I “read” as an American to most people because of my casual attire. Nonetheless, I faced no problems at airports or anywhere else that required my passport. The locals were consistently friendly and welcoming.

My experiences throughout the Commonwealth have been notably positive. In many instances, post-colonial regimes have been far worse than the colonial era, which makes it all the more important for the UK to foster stronger ties with its former colonies.

Opportunities for the Future

The Commonwealth presents a tremendous opportunity for the UK to form critical partnerships in both business and culture. These ties should be nurtured and strengthened, as the Commonwealth can be a powerful force in driving global economic growth and improving the well-being of its people.

By positioning the Commonwealth as the world's largest free market, we can help its members become the wealthiest and healthiest nations on the planet. The Commonwealth's people are the most welcoming in the world, and it is time for the UK to stand by them and support these nations' aspirations.

Several specific countries stand out for their hospitality: Australia, Cypress, and nations understand the importance of tourism to their economies and actively work to promote it. Finally, it's worth noting that, with the exception of the non-metropolitan parts of England, the people in Britain are generally considered the mildest and friendliest in the world.

Let's continue to celebrate our shared history and create a brighter future for the Commonwealth.
