Understanding What Your Cat Can Sense While Tracking Invisible Movements
Have you ever wondered what your cat is sensing when she follows a black orb in rapid movements? Your cat's behaviors are not without purpose—she is picking up cues far beyond your own perception. In this article, we will explore the various sensory capabilities of your feline friend and what might be triggering her keen interest in seemingly invisible movements.
Observing Your Cat's Behavior
I recently observed my cat tracking a black orb in rapid movements, just as I was following it. It disappeared into the dresses hung there with a slight fluff of the dress swaying in the air. Such behavior is not uncommon in cats; they are instinctual hunters and can perceive things that humans often miss.
Enhanced Senses: A Window into Your Cat's World
Cats are equipped with highly developed senses, particularly their vision and hearing, which allow them to perceive things that humans cannot.
1. Movement of Small Creatures
Cats are known for their hunting instincts. They may be tracking the movements of small animals such as insects or rodents that are too small or quick for you to notice. Your cat could be picking up on small movements that you might miss.
2. Ultraviolet Light
Cats can see some wavelengths of light in the ultraviolet spectrum, which are invisible to humans. It is possible that your cat is reacting to something reflecting or emitting UV light. This might be a reason why she follows certain things that you cannot see.
3. Sound
Cats have excellent hearing and can detect high-frequency sounds that are inaudible to humans. She may be responding to sounds made by small creatures or even electrical appliances, which could be causing vibrations that she perceives.
4. Reflections or Shadows
Sometimes, light reflections or shadows can catch a cat's eye, prompting them to follow what seems like movement. Your cat might be reacting to these visual cues, even if they are not actual movements.
5. Changes in the Environment
Cats are sensitive to changes in their surroundings, including air currents, which might make them alert to something unseen by you. These subtle changes can trigger their instincts to investigate further.
Your Cat's Keen Senses in Action
Your cat's auditory and night-vision are far more astute than those of humans. Chances are, your cat is either hearing critters within your walls, ceiling, or floor, or sensing them through other means.
My previous cat always alerted me to my sporadic rodent problems by mysteriously "scanning" the area. Within a couple of days, the traps would catch one or sometimes two mice! She could also hunt down, find, and kill waterbugs during the pitch-dark of the night-time hours as I slept. I often woke up come dawn's twilight time to find her "gifts" of them deposited on my bed! My present cat can also hone in on waterbugs from 10 feet away, even when they are beneath or behind furniture. Thank goodness though, this gal doesn't yet have the habit of bringing them to me in bed in the middle of the night after she kills them, as did my previous cat.
She can also sense and catch the smallest of pantry moths that I would never otherwise have been able to see. At some of the times and lighting circumstances when she can see or hear, your cat's keen senses truly shine.
Conclusion
Your cat's behavior is not without purpose. She is picking up cues far beyond your own perception, and her sharp senses are a testament to her hunting instincts. Understanding these behaviors can help you appreciate her more and provide a better, safer environment for your furry friend.
